Making history come alive, this Heritage Trails Park features Lock 14 along the Miami and Erie Canal. Picnic, take a walk on the Towpath Trail, or bring a fishing pole and try your luck.
Directions: 3 miles north of St. Marys on State Route 66, Turn west onto Lock 14 Road, continue ½ mile, turn left at the stop sign onto Schillinger Rd. Lock 14 parking will be on the right.
Miami and Erie CanalTowpath Trail
Hike or bike the newest section of The Miami and Erie Canal Towpath Trail found between Glynwood Road and Lock 14 Park. This Heritage Trails Park District section of trail is 2 miles in length with a compacted gravel surface. Trail bikes are suggested. Sections of the Canal can be navigated in personal watercraft.
The Towpath Trail in Auglaize County runs for 22 miles from Minster on the south end to Spencerville at the north. Make a stop in New Bremen at the Bicycle Museum of America or in St. Marys at the local coffee shop. These quaint historic towns balance the natural and agricultural beauty seen along the towpath trail. Hikers and bicyclist will find mixed surfaces from grass, gravel to asphalt pavement.
Deep Cut Park
Provides access to miles of Towpath Trail along the historic Miami and Erie Canal. This section of trail is under construction to improve the trail so expect muddy conditions Hikers, horseback riders, and cyclists will see the extraordinary construction that went into cutting the Canal through this glacial moraine. Keep in mind as you enjoy the shady valley that all the work was done by man and mule in the 1800’s.
